Origin
The Notocactus scopa originates from South America and can be primarily found in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The species mainly grows in dry and sunny areas. The Notocactus Scopa, also known as the Silver Ball Cactus, grows on slopes and mountainous terrain.
Characteristics
Characteristic of the Notocactus scopa are the dense spines that completely cover the plant. The cactus has a spherical shape that becomes cylindrical as the plant grows. The flowers, predominantly yellow in colour, typically appear in summer at the top of the cactus. It is a smaller cactus species, with a maximum growth of about 15 centimetres.
Care
The Notocactus scopa requires full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Since the cactus comes from a dry climate, it does not have a high requirement for water and is relatively drought-tolerant. During the plant’s growing period, from late spring to early autumn, moderate watering is sufficient. Watering needs to be reduced in the winter to prevent root rot. It is recommended to feed this cactus with a cactus fertiliser during the growth period.
