Origin
The Mammillaria pilcayensis is a species of cactus that originates from Mexico. The specific sub-region in which this plant can be found is the Sierra de Pueblo mountain range, located in the Puebla region. Here, the Mammillaria pilcayensis grows at high altitudes, preferably in rocky environments or amongst pieces of gravel.
Characteristics
The Mammillaria pilcayensis has a cylindrical and compact form and can grow up to 30 centimetres tall and 10 centimetres wide. Characteristics of this cactus species are the star-shaped, jelly-like flowers that can vary in colour from white to light pink. Moreover, the Mammillaria pilcayensis has sharp spikes that run along the length of the plant. These spikes are predominantly white in colour, with occasional touches of light brown.
Care
Regarding care, the Mammillaria pilcayensis requires a sunny to partially shady location for optimal growth. Watering should be done sparingly, especially in the winter months to prevent rot. The plant is hardy up to around -1 degrees Celsius and requires well-draining soil to prevent excess water. Regular fertilising during the growing season promotes the growth and flowering of this cactus species.
