Origin
The Melocactus ruestii is a type of cactus that originates from the Caribbean. It primarily grows in dry, rocky areas. This plant is named after Antoine Rüest, a Swiss plant researcher from the 19th century.
Characteristics
The Melocactus ruestii is recognisable by its spherical, green body and striking red fruits. These fruits are located in a kind of 'tower' on top of the cactus, known as the cephalium. This unique structure, which is only found in Melocacti, produces both flowers and fruits. The plant can grow to a height of about 20 centimetres.
Care
The Melocactus ruestii thrives in a sunny, warm location with well-drained soil. Although the plant can tolerate some dryness, regular watering during the growing season is recommended. During the winter period, the plant should be kept cool and fairly dry, as excessive dampness can damage the plant. Like other cacti, the Melocactus ruestii cannot withstand temperatures below freezing.
