Origin
The Opuntia microdasys, also known as the Bunny Ear Cactus, originates from the dry parts of Northern Mexico. Over time, this plant has spread to various desert areas all over the world. The natural conditions of the plant are characterised by periods of strong sun exposure alternated with periods of complete drought.
Characteristics
The Opuntia microdasys distinguishes itself by its notable form which is reminiscent of bunny ears, hence its nickname. The plant boasts a dense coverage of small golden thorns that look like bundles of white wool. The thorns are actually modified leaves, specifically adapted to minimise water loss. Immature plants are usually cushion-like, whereas mature ones adopt more tree-like growth patterns with a clearly definable trunk. This plant rarely blooms under domestic cultivation conditions, but when it does, it produces quite large yellow flowers.
Care
Taking care of an Opuntia microdasys requires well-draining soil and an environment with ample sunlight. As this plant is acclimatised to dry climates, it tends to store water in its stems. Therefore, over-watering should be avoided otherwise the plant could start to rot. It's also crucial to keep the environmental temperature above 10 degrees Celsius, as the plant can die if temperatures are any lower. During the growth period in the spring and summer, the plant requires light fertilisation.
