Origin
The Hildewintera aureispina cristata, also known as the Golden Rat Tail, originates from Bolivia. This type of cactus is predominantly found in the mountainous regions of this South American country. The Hildewintera aureispina cristata is especially found in its natural habitat at altitudes between 2500 and 3500 meters.
Characteristics
The Hildewintera aureispina cristata is a cactus with an unpredictable growth pattern. Its twisted, ribbed stems that have a bright green to golden yellow colour are distinctive. The plant produces elongated, bright yellow flowers that are 6 to 8 centimetres long. Another unique feature of this cactus is that its thorns are quite soft and hardly sharp, which is atypical for cacti.
Care
The Hildewintera aureispina cristata is relatively easy to care for. The cactus needs a sunny location, preferably with a few hours of direct sunlight per day. During the winter months, it is advisable to place the plant in a cooler location, at temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. As for watering; this should be done sparingly. In the summer period, once every two weeks is sufficient, in the winter once a month is enough. It is important to let the soil dry out between watering to prevent root rot.
