Origin
The Dioscorea mexicana, also known as the Mexican Yam, has its origin in Central and South America. This species, belonging to the Dioscoreaceae family, is widespread in tropical and subtropical regions. It is mainly found in the wild, in clearings within forests and on rocky slopes.

Characteristics
The Dioscorea mexicana is a perennial plant known for its large, bulbous tuberous root which can grow up to 5 meters in diameter. The plant produces long, slender stems with heart-shaped leaves. The flowers, which are predominantly male, appear in clusters and are greenish-yellow in colour. The fruit is an elongated capsule with wings.

Care
Due to its tropical origin, the Dioscorea mexicana requires a warm, humid environment to grow. The plant performs best in well-draining soil and needs ample space because of its extensive root system. Although it can survive in direct sunlight, the Dioscorea mexicana prefers partial shade. It's important to water the plant regularly, but to avoid stagnant water. Additionally, the Dioscorea mexicana is more resistant to drought than most other species in its family.
