Origin
The Oreocereus trollii, also known as the 'Old Man of the Andes', is native to South America. This species of cactus is originally from Argentina and Bolivia, where it grows at high altitudes in the Andes. Characteristics of these regions are the extreme weather conditions with large temperature differences, making the plant well resistant to drought and cold.

Characteristics
The Oreocereus trollii is a slow-growing cactus that can reach up to one and a half metres high. It has a dense layer of hair-like spikes, which protect the plant from the harsh sun and at the same time retain the necessary heat. These spikes are usually white, but can have a reddish hue. The flowers of the Oreocereus trollii are tubular and typically red, but also vary in shades of pink and orange.

Care
The Oreocereus trollii needs full sun and well-draining soil to grow. Although it can withstand drought, it needs regular watering, especially in the summer and spring seasons. During the winter months, the water supply can be reduced. It is also important to take into account that this cactus does not cope well with excessive water and can rot if it is too wet.
