Origin
The Pachycereus pecten-aboriginum, also known as the Hariyamacactus, originates from Mexico. This towering cactus grows in the desert regions of Sonora, Sinaloa, and Baja California. These are colossal plants that often appear in colonies and dominate the dry, harsh landscape.
Characteristics
A notable characteristic of the Pachycereus pecten-aboriginum is its size; it can grow up to 15 metres high with a diameter of 65 cm. This giant cactus has numerous, prominent ribs equipped with sharp spines. The plant blooms at night and produces large, white, bell-shaped flowers that are pollinated by bats.
Care
When it comes to the care of the Pachycereus pecten-aboriginum, it is mainly about simulating its natural desert conditions. It needs highly well-draining soil and plenty of sunlight. Overwatering should be avoided as it can cause root rot. Although it can withstand drought, it needs regular water and feeding during the growing season. However, this should be limited during the winter months when the plant is dormant.
