Origin
The Opuntia macrocalyx, also known as the prickly pear cactus, is native to the arid, desert regions of Mexico. Its growing conditions are thereby adapted to dry, poor soil and high temperatures. Due to its excellent adaptability, this cactus has spread throughout the world, in areas with similar climatic conditions.
Characteristics
The Opuntia macrocalyx is characterised by its flat, oval stem segments, covered with clusters of fine, brush-like spikes. It blooms in the late spring or early summer with bright red or orange-red flowers. When mature, it can reach a height of 2 meters. The fruits of this plant are edible and are often used in Mexican cuisine.
Care
An important aspect of the care for the Opuntia macrocalyx is providing adequate light, it thrives best in full sun. As with most cacti, this plant also requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Watering should be done sparingly, too much water can harm the plant. Due to its native desert conditions, it is also highly tolerant of drought. In order to bloom, the plant needs a rest period during the colder months, during which the water supply must be reduced and the temperature may drop, but never below freezing point.
