Origin
The Agave schidigera is a plant originating from the desert areas of northern Mexico. This plant is part of the Asparagaceae family and owes its name to the strong spikes on its leaves. Schidigera - meaning shield bearing - refers to these characteristic features. Although it is one of the smaller Agave species, it is still able to withstand harsh and dry conditions.
Characteristics
The Agave schidigera is characterised by its compact size and the unusually long, thin leaves, which end in strong black spikes at the tips. The leaves are covered in thin white threads that give the plant a special appearance. In the flowering period, the Agave schidigera produces a tall stem from which often dozens of yellow-green flowers emerge. However, this blooming occurs only once in the lifetime of the plant, after which the plant dies.
Care
The Agave schidigera requires little maintenance and is particularly tolerant of dry conditions. They are resistant to full sun and require well-drained soil to prevent root rot. Although they are resistant to cold, they do not survive in areas where the temperature drops below -6 degrees Celsius. In the absence of natural light, they also do well when placed indoors next to a south-facing window. Watering should be done when the top half of the soil is dry, but they are very resistant to long periods of drought.
