Origin
The Ficus benghalensis, also known as the Banyan tree, originates from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. It is the national tree of the Republic of India. Additionally, the tree is often associated with various religious and spiritual rituals, specifically within Hinduism.

Characteristics
The Ficus benghalensis is a tree that is characterised by its immense size and its extensive root system. The tree can grow to a height of about 30 meters and a width of roughly 200 meters, with branches extending and establishing themselves in the ground, thus forming new trees. The leaves of the Ficus benghalensis are large, with a smooth, dark green colour. Flowers and fruits are small, but they grow in large clusters together.

Care
Though the Ficus benghalensis comes from a warm climate, the plant is tolerant to a wide range of climates, including drought. The plant requires lots of sunlight and grows best in a bright environment, out of direct sunlight. Watering should be moderate, but the soil should never completely dry out. This plant grows well in nutritious, well-draining soil and requires periodic fertilisation for optimal growth. Superfluous or dead branches can be pruned at any time of the year, without this having detrimental effects on the plant.
