Origin
The Ficus elastica Abidjan, also known as the Rubber Plant, has its origin in Southeast Asia. More specifically, the plant is originally from the regions around India, Malaysia and Indonesia. There, the Ficus elastica Abidjan grows in rainforests, usually on the slopes of mountains and in river valleys. The plant belongs to the Moraceae family, also known as the mulberry family.
Characteristics
The Ficus elastica Abidjan is recognisable by its large, shiny and dark purple to almost black leaves. The leaves are leathery, and can grow up to 40 centimetres long in a healthy plant stand. The plant grows into a medium to large tree in its natural environment, but is most commonly found as a smaller indoor plant in most households. The mature plant can grow up to 10 meters high both indoors and outdoors.
Care
The Ficus elastica Abidjan requires regular care in order to grow optimally. The plant needs average sunlight, it is not suitable to stand directly in the sun. The soil the plant stands in should always be moist, but not soaked, as this can lead to root rot. Ideally, the temperature should be between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. The plant should be fertilised once a month during the growth period, i.e. in the spring and summer.
