Origin
The Ficus benjamina Danita®, also known as 'waringin' or 'Benjamin’s fig', traces its origin to Southeast Asia and Australia, where it grows in a subtropical to tropical climate. The ficus is part of the Moraceae family, better known as the mulberry family. In nature, this type of ficus can develop into a large tree.
Characteristics
The Ficus benjamina Danita® is known for its decorative, glossy, dark green leaves that grow compactly on the branches. The plant has an elegant, hanging growth pattern and produces soft, dangling branches. The trunk of the Ficus benjamina Danita® is usually encircled by aerial roots, giving the plant a unique and exotic appearance. Although the plant in nature produces flowers and fruits, this rarely occurs indoors.
Care
To ensure the health of the Ficus benjamina Danita®, regular, moderate watering is necessary; the soil should dry out between watering sessions. A location with plenty of indirect light is desirable, but direct sunlight should be avoided. In addition, the Ficus benjamina Danita® thrives in an average to high humidity. A general potting soil with proper drainage is suitable for this plant. To promote growth, during the growth season the plant can be fertilised monthly.
