DescriptionSpecifications

Origin
The Ficus carica, oftentimes known as the fig tree, is a fruit-bearing plant species from the mulberry family. This deciduous tree or shrub originates from West Asia and the Eastern part of the Mediterranean. It is one of the earliest known cultivated fruits and has been grown since prehistoric times. The fig tree has been spread by humans almost all over the world.

Characteristics
The Ficus carica grows into a relatively small tree or a large shrub with a significant spread. The leaves are deeply lobed with up to five lobes and can become up to 25 centimetres wide. It produces fruit several times a year. The fruit, commonly just referred to as the 'fig', is an inverted inflorescence and can vary in colour from green to purple, depending on the variety.

Care
The Ficus Carica requires full sun to light shade and functions well in various soil types, as long as they are well-draining. The plant can withstand drought, but for optimal fruit production, regular watering is recommended. In the early years, it is advisable to protect it from the wind. Pruning of the fig tree usually takes place in the winter months when the leaves have fallen.
