Origin
The Aloe tongaensis 'Medusa' is a hybrid species of the Asphodelaceae family. This species arose in the botanical garden of Tonga in South Africa, from which it takes its name. It is a relatively recent discovery and has since gained some popularity among succulent enthusiasts.
Characteristics
The Aloe tongaensis 'Medusa' is known for its remarkable appearance that resembles the hair of the mythological figure Medusa. The plant has many long, thin leaves that grow in all directions, giving it a unique, almost coastal-like appearance. The colour varies from blue-green to bright green, depending on exposure to the sun. The flower stalks are red and bear slim, tubular flowers that are primarily orange in colour.
Care
Aloe tongaensis 'Medusa' is a fairly straightforward plant to take care of. It needs well-draining soil and lots of sunlight. Though the plant can withstand some drought, it requires regular watering, but avoid water pockets which can lead to root rot. Just like other members of the Aloe genus, the 'Medusa' is not hardy and therefore needs to be brought indoors or protected during the cold winter months.
