Origin
The Citrus hystrix, better known as 'Papeda', originates from tropical Asia. It is mainly found in countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. The plant plays a significant role in traditional Asian cuisine and is primarily used for its aromatic properties.
Characteristics
The Papeda is an evergreen shrub or small tree that can grow up to 12 metres high. A characteristic feature of this plant is the double leaves, which give off a rich, spicy scent when bruised. The fruits of the Citrus hystrix are round and green in colour, with a distinctly bumpy skin.
Care
The Papeda prefers sunny, warm locations and well-drained soil. It can withstand brief periods of drought, but needs regular watering for optimal growth. Although it is a tropical plant, the Papeda can also overwinter in warmer temperate climates, provided it is protected from frost.
