Origin
The Citrus lemon 'Meyer', also known as the Meyer Lemon, is originally from China. This variety, named after the American agriculturalist Frank N. Meyer who brought the plant to the United States in 1908, is a hybrid between the Citrus medica and a mandarin or a wild orange.
Characteristics
The Citrus lemon 'Meyer' is a small, evergreen tree or shrub with dark green, glossy leaves. It produces fragrant flowers and fruits that are smaller and rounder than standard lemons, with a thin, deep yellow to orange peel and a dark yellow flesh. The fruits of the Meyer lemon are notably sweeter and less sour than those of other lemon varieties.
Care
The Citrus lemon 'Meyer' thrives best in sunny, well-drained soil, although it can also grow in partial shade. Watering should be consistent to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, and in the winter months the crop should be protected against frost. It is also recommended to regularly spray the plant with neem oil to prevent harmful insects and diseases. The Meyer lemon is winter-hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11, but can also be grown as a pot plant in colder climates.
