Origin
Cupressus sempervirens 'Totem', also known as the Italian cypress, has its origin in the eastern Mediterranean region. This evergreen, needle-like tree has played an important role in the Mediterranean landscape and culture since ancient times, including in Greece and Italy.
Characteristics
The Cupressus sempervirens 'Totem' is a fast-growing conifer known for its narrow, columnar growth. The tree can reach a height of 20 to 30 metres, with a width of only 1 to 4 metres. The 'Totem''s leaf is glossy dark green and the bark is reddish-brown, characterised by long thin strips that easily peel off. The fruits of this species are initially green and turn brown as they ripen.
Care
Although the Cupressus sempervirens 'Totem' is reasonably hardy in winter, it prefers a sheltered location to prevent wind damage. This sun-loving tree performs best in well-drained soil and has a moderate need for water. The 'Totem' requires little maintenance, but the tree can be pruned to maintain its narrow, columnar silhouette. In addition, it is recommended to regularly fertilise the tree, especially during the growing period.
