Origin
The Ilex crenata 'Impala' originates from East Asia, where this plant is primarily found in cool and humid mountain regions of China, Korea and Japan. This shrub is also known as the Japanese Holly.
Characteristics
The Ilex crenata 'Impala' is a broad-branched shrub with small, leathery, dark green leaves. This compact shrub can reach a height up to 1 meter and in late spring and early summer it blooms with a few small white flowers. Afterwards, black berries form in the autumn. The leaves are roundish and have fine serrated edges, hence the nickname 'crenata'.
Care
When planting the Ilex crenata 'Impala', a location in full sun or partial shade is recommended. The shrub prefers moist, well-drained soil. During the growth periods, it is advisable to water regularly and add organic fertiliser every 2 years for optimum health and growth. Pruning is best in the spring to achieve the desired shape and density.
