Origin
The Olea europaea, better known as the olive tree, has its roots in the Mediterranean region. This plant has been cultivated and exploited for its fruits and wood for thousands of years, mainly in Mediterranean countries such as Italy, Spain, and Greece. The olive tree also has a long history in the Middle East and North Africa.
Characteristics
The Olea europaea is a long-lived evergreen tree that can grow on average 10 to 20 metres high. The leaves are long and narrow, silvery green on top and grey underneath, growing in opposite pairs along the branches. The tree produces small, white flowers in late spring, followed by a fruit that is initially green and turns black upon ripening. The wood from the olive tree is very tough and extremely hard.
Care
Despite its Mediterranean origin, the Olea europaea can withstand a variety of climates and soil types, but the tree needs full sun to grow well. It requires well-drained soil and does not cope well with overly wet conditions. The olive tree is drought tolerant once established, but regular watering during dry periods will promote fruit production. Pruning is typically carried out in late winter or early spring to maintain the tree's shape and promote light penetration.
