Origin
The Olea europaea, better known as the olive tree, has its origin in the Mediterranean region. The cultivation of this tree goes far back in time, to the Neolithic era, which possibly makes it the oldest cultivated tree in the world. As civilizations spread, so did the olive tree and it is now found in many parts of the world.

Characteristics
The Olea europaea is a slow growing, evergreen tree that can reach heights of 10 to 20 meters. Its leaves are silver-green and oval in shape, while the relatively small, white flowers hang in clusters from the tree. It produces the well-known olive fruits, which are initially green and turn black as they ripen.

Care
Olive trees appreciate a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil. They are fairly drought tolerant, but need regular watering during the growing period. Pruning is possible, but not necessary, as the Olea europaea does not grow quickly. It is recommended to plant the tree in the spring or summer, when the soil is warm, to promote good root growth. Feeding the plant with a slow-release fertiliser in the early spring can also contribute to the health and growth strength of the tree.
