Cordyline australis 'Red Star'
4CORSTU24
Origin
Phormium tenax 'Variegatum', also known as the New Zealand flax, originates from New Zealand. The name Phormium derives from the Greek meaning 'basket' or 'wickerwork', referencing the traditional use of the long, strong leaves by the Maori people to weave baskets and mats.
Characteristics
The Phormium tenax 'Variegatum', which can grow to a height of 1.5 to 2.5 metres, is characterised by its long, sword-shaped leaves. The leaves have a striking colour pattern, ranging from green with cream or yellow stripes. The plant blossoms in the summer with clusters of dark red to almost black flowers that can reach up to 4 metres in height.
Care
The Phormium tenax 'Variegatum' is a very hardy plant that thrives in many types of soil, including drier and poorer ones. The plant requires full sun or partial shade and needs to be protected against strong wind. Insufficient sunlight can lead to a decrease in the vibrancy of the leaf colour. In drier periods, the plant may need additional watering. It's important to note that this plant is relatively frost hardy, but may still yield damage in severe frost.
