Origin
The Pittosporum tobira, also known as Japanese Mock Orange, has its origin in East Asia. The majority of this plant species originates from Japan, China and Korea. Particularly in Japan, the plant is popular and can be found in many gardens.
Characteristics
Pittosporum tobira is characterised by its dark green, glossy leaves which are wavy at the edges. The plant produces small, star-shaped flowers with a pleasant fragrance, similar to that of orange blossom. The flowers are followed by small seed pods that burst open to reveal red seeds. The shrub can be grown either as a bush or as a small tree, depending on pruning and support.
Care
The Pittosporum tobira requires well-drained soil and a sunny to semi-shaded spot for optimal growth. While the plant can tolerate some drought, it benefits from regular watering, particularly in drier climates. The plant is hardy, but protection from severe frost is recommended. Pruning is usually not required, but can be done to retain the desired shape.
