Origin
The Sciadopitys verticillata, also known as the Japanese Umbrella Pine, originates from Japan and belongs to one of the oldest tree genera in the world. This conifer is predominantly found in moist and shaded places in the mountainous regions of Japan.

Characteristics
The Sciadopitys verticillata is remarkable for its durable, evergreen nature and its unique 'umbrella' branching pattern. The tree can reach a height of 15 to 20 metres and has dark green, needle-like leaves grouped in bundles of ten to twenty. It has thick, reddish-brown bark and produces brown pine cones.

Care
In terms of caring for the Sciadopitys verticillata, it requires some attention. The tree thrives in moist, well-drained soil and requires sufficient shade, especially during the hot summer months. It is recommended to fertilise the tree annually to promote healthy growth. The Umbrella Pine is reasonably resistant to diseases, but vigilance for leaf pests and fungal diseases is necessary.
