Tradescantia Zebrina Compacta

Origin
The Adansonia digitata, also known as the African Baobab, originates from Africa. This impressive tree is primarily found in the Sahel, the semi-arid belt separating the Sahara from the rest of the continent. It is incredibly old and can live between 1000 to 3000 years. The tree holds cultural significance in many African societies and often features at the heart of folklore and mythology.
Characteristics
Adansonia digitata stands out for its large cylindrical trunk, which can reach a diameter of up to 7 metres. The tree has smooth, grey-brown bark and is characterised by its deciduous, short, bottle-like branches. The flowers are large, with white petals and a yellow centre. The fruits of the baobab, known as monkey bread, are egg-shaped and eagerly consumed by local fauna.
Care
Although the baobab tree is adapted to dry and poor soils, it certainly requires care to remain in optimal condition. Always provide full sun and warm temperatures, as the tree does not respond well to cold. Watering should be moderate; the baobab is sensitive to over-watering. The soil has to be well-drained to prevent root rot. Don't forget to fertilise the tree annually for optimal growth.
