Origin
The Aspidistra elatior variegata originates from the shady forests of East Asia, where it can mainly be found in Japan and Taiwan. This plant belongs to the Asparagaceae family and is one of the few species within the Aspidistra genus that can be well cultivated.
Characteristics
The Aspidistra elatior variegata is a robust and sturdy houseplant. It is characterised by its dark green, leathery leaves often adorned with cream to yellow-coloured stripes. The leaves are long and narrow and can reach a height of 60 to 75 centimetres. This makes this plant slightly larger than the average Aspidistra. The plant rarely blooms, but when it does, it produces small, inconspicuous flowers that grow near the ground.
Care
Caring for the Aspidistra elatior variegata is simple due to the plant's non-demanding nature. As it naturally grows in the shade, this plant thrives best in semi-shade to shady conditions and can also survive in low light intensity. It prefers well-draining soil and should be watered moderately, allowing the top layer of soil to dry out between watering sessions. Generally, this plant is very tolerant to drier indoor climates.
