Dasylirion serratifolium
Stem
4DASERS20
Origin
The Dasylirion longissimum, better known as the Mexican Grass Tree, is originally found in the north-east of Mexico. This plant, which belongs to the Asparagaceae family, predominantly grows in semi-arid areas of the Chihuahua desert region.
Characteristics
The Dasylirion longissimum is a long-lived, evergreen plant that grows up to a height of 1.2 to 1.8 meters. The characteristic sharply toothed leaves resemble a sword and can become very long, up to 2 meters. This plant species develops a thick, short trunk over many years. It bears green-coloured flowers which present themselves in conspicuous long, upright spikes during the summer.
Care
The care of the Dasylirion longissimum requires good drainage as the plant is intolerant to wet feet. It can withstand drought and prefers full sunlight. It is recommended to water the plant when the soil feels dry. A moderate grower, the Dasylirion longissimum is usually propagated by seed or by offsets from the base of the plant.
