Origin
The Gardenia thunbergia, also known as the White Gardenia, has its origin in South Africa. It is mainly found in the coastal areas and along the rivers of the Eastern Cape to Kwazulu-Natal. This special plant belongs to the Rubiaceae family.
Characteristics
The Gardenia thunbergia is an evergreen shrub that can reach up to 5 meters in height. The common name, White Gardenia, refers to the white, fragrant flowers that bloom mainly at night. This plant has shiny, leathery leaves and a remarkable grey bark. A unique characteristic is the hard wood, which was traditionally used by the Zulus for making spears.
Care
In terms of care, the Gardenia thunbergia requires well-draining soil and plenty of sunlight. Although this plant can tolerate some drought, regular watering during dry periods can be beneficial. It is a slow-growing plant and pruning is generally not recommended. Finally, it is advised to fertilise the plant during the growing season to promote blooming.
