Origin
The Loropetalum chinense 'Ever Red', also known as Chinese fringeflower, originates from the mountainous regions of China, Japan and the south of Asia. It is a plant from the Hamamelidaceae family and is mainly loved for its graceful appearance. It is a shrub that is often planted in gardens and borders.
Characteristics
Characteristic for the Loropetalum chinense 'Ever Red' are the notably red-brown coloured leaves and the deep red flowers. The flowers are small but conspicuous due to their fringe-like appearance and the bloom occurs in the spring. The ultimate height can vary from one and a half to two metres. The bark of the stems and branches is cream-white, which forms an interesting contrast with the leaf colour.
Care
The Loropetalum chinense 'Ever Red' thrives best in a sunny to semi-shady location, in a well-draining, humus-rich soil. It is a reasonably winter-hardy plant, but can be somewhat protected with a mulch layer during severe frost. The plant tolerates water scarcity reasonably well, but during prolonged drought extra watering may be required. It is advisable to prune the plant after flowering to maintain compact growth.
