Origin
The Sparmannia africana, also known as African hemp, has its roots in South Africa. The plant originally grew in the lush, subtropical forests there. In the 18th century, the Sparmannia africana was brought to Europe where it quickly became incredibly popular as a house plant. Today, the plant can be found in many countries across the world, in households and botanical gardens alike.
Characteristics
The Sparmannia africana is an evergreen, vigorous climbing plant that can grow up to two meters high. The plant is characterised by its heart-shaped, dark green leaves which feel velvety to the touch. The Sparmannia africana blooms from winter to spring, during which it produces white or light pink flowers with bright yellow stamens. These flowers appear in conspicuous clusters and can be up to 10 cm wide.
Care
The Sparmannia africana prefers a bright location, but cannot tolerate direct sunlight. The plant requires a consistently warm temperature and slightly moist soil. It is important to regularly water and fertilise the Sparmannia africana, especially during the growing period. To ensure the plant keeps its shape, it's recommended to prune the plant back once a year.
