Origin
The Callisia 'Turtle' belongs to the Commelinaceae family and has its origin in Central and South America. This houseplant has a tropical heritage, which influences its preference for light and warm conditions. The plant is also known under the name 'Bolivian Jew'.
Characteristics
The Callisia 'Turtle' is a green crawling plant characterised by its compact shape and its small, glossy, oval leaves. The leaves have a striking dark green colour, with light stripes, creating an attractive texture and colour contrast. The plant often grows out horizontally, making it an ideal hanging plant. In the wild, the plant can bloom, but this rarely happens in indoor conditions.
Care
The Callisia 'Turtle' prefers a light to semi-shaded location. However, direct sunlight should be avoided as this can burn the leaves. The plant likes high humidity and should be watered regularly, where the excess water should be able to drain away well. In the winter months, the plant may be kept slightly drier. Temperatures between 18 and 24°C are ideal for the Callisia 'Turtle'.
