Origin
The Beaucarnea, also known as the Ponytail Palm, is a graceful plant species that originally comes from the dry areas of Mexico. The plant grows in the wild in semi-desert areas where it adapts to the arid conditions.
Characteristics
What is unique about the Beaucarnea are its thickened trunk and the curly, grass-like leaves that grow at the top of the trunk. This trunk serves as a water reservoir, enabling the plant to survive long periods of drought. The Beaucarnea can develop flowers when mature, although this rarely happens in plants being grown in a pot.
Care
Adequate care for the Beaucarnea includes placement in bright, indirect sunlight and maintaining a warm temperature. Although the plant thrives in dry conditions, regular watering is required. However, this should be done sparingly, as the plant is susceptible to root rot. Overwatering is thus the most common cause of disease in this plant species.
