Acer palmatum Phoenix
F00002137
Origin
The Acer palmatum 'Little Princess' is a type of Japanese maple that originates from East Asia. It was initially discovered in Japan and South Korea, but this species is now known worldwide and is often found in temperate climate zones. Although it is a popular species, it is often grown in gardens and landscapes for its aesthetic appeal.
Characteristics
The Acer palmatum 'Little Princess' has a compact growth habit and remains relatively small compared to other Acer palmatum species, usually reaching a maximum height of 1.5 to 2 meters. Its foliage is bright green and lobed, turning spectacular red and orange colours in the autumn. The 'Little Princess', known for its slow growth, produces small, red flowers in late spring, followed by decorative, winged seed pods, like other maples.
Care
The Acer palmatum 'Little Princess' requires well-drained soil and a sheltered position for best results. It prefers slightly acidic soil and should be protected against severe frost in winter. Pruning should be limited to removing dead or damaged branches, preferably in late summer or early autumn to prevent disturbing the sap flow. It requires minimal maintenance, as long as it's provided with the right conditions to grow.
