Origin
The Buxus harlandii, also known as the Chinese boxwood, is native to China. In its homeland, it grows both in rural and mountainous areas. The plant was originally most common in the Fujian province, but has since been introduced to many other parts of China.
Characteristics
The Buxus harlandii is a small, slow-growing evergreen shrub. The leaves are lance-shaped, glossy, dark green and have somewhat curled edges. A distinctive feature of the Buxus harlandii are the fragrant, pale yellow flowers that appear in the spring. These are pollinated by insects, resulting in small green seeds that turn into brown capsules when they are ripe.
Care
Caring for the Buxus harlandii is fairly simple. The plant can grow in both full sun and partial shade and requires a well-draining soil. It is drought-resistant, but does not tolerate waterlogging. The Buxus harlandii is a slow-growing plant and needs to be pruned into shape annually for a good appearance. Protection against the cold is not necessary as it remains green in winter.
