Origin
The Pinus thunbergii, also known as the Japanese black pine, is native to Japan and Korea. This pine tree is commonly found along the coasts of these countries. It particularly thrives on cliff faces and sand flats. The tree has, however, managed to spread across the entire world.
Characteristics
The Pinus thunbergii has dark green, prickly needles that protrude from the branches at a sharp angle. The bark of the tree is dark brown to black and develops deep grooves over time. The tree can reach a height of twenty-five meters, but most specimens are considerably smaller. Another characteristic aspect of the Pinus thunbergii is the production of black cone-shaped fruits.
Care
The Pinus thunbergii is not particularly demanding in terms of the soil it grows in, but it thrives in well-drained soil. The tree does best in full sunlight, but it can also survive in semi-shade. Regular fertilisation and sufficient water are important for growth, although the tree is fairly drought tolerant. Finally, it is advisable to prune the tree annually for a more aesthetically pleasing shape and better growth.
