Origin
The Zanthoxylum piperitum, also known as the Japanese pepper tree, has its origin in East Asia. It primarily grows in Japan, Korea, and China, where it is found in nature on hills and mountains. The plant was introduced to Europe in the 18th century, and is now cultivated all over the world for its aesthetic appeal and unique characteristics.

Characteristics
The Zanthoxylum piperitum Bonsai is characterised by its distinctive thorns on both the branches and the trunk. The flowers are small, bright yellow and grow in clusters, after which they are followed by small red berry-like fruits. The leaves are feather-like and consist of 5 to 11 pointed leaflets that turn orange-red in the autumn. The plant can grow up to four metres tall, but when cultivated as a bonsai it usually maintains a height between 30 and 60 centimetres.

Care
In the care of the Zanthoxylum piperitum Bonsai, it is important that the plant receives sufficient sunlight, however, it also tolerates a shady environment. It needs to be watered regularly to keep the soil moist, without creating an excess of water. Additionally, the plant prefers a not too rich soil, but the ground needs to be well drained. Ultimately, a winter rest period is essential for the plant to be able to produce new shoots and flowers in the spring.
