Origin
The Lithops sp., also known as living stones, are succulents that naturally occur in the semi-arid regions of Southern Africa. They are primarily found in Namibia and South Africa, where they have adapted to extreme drought and high temperatures. The plants predominantly grow on rocky soil or among pebbles.
Characteristics
A characteristic of the Lithops sp. is the unique form that strongly resembles stones or pebbles. This camouflage helps the plants to remain unnoticed by grazing animals. The plants have two fleshy leaves that together take on the form of a stone. In the spring or autumn, the leaves bloom to reveal a yellow or white flower.
Care
Lithops sp. requires little maintenance and is therefore an ideal indoor plant for beginners. The plant prefers light, but indirect sun and thrives well in a place with stable temperatures. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it is important that the soil dries out completely between watering. Due to their adaptability to dry conditions, they only need water sporadically, especially in the winter months.
