Origin
The Dieffenbachia 'Mars' has its origin in Central and South America where it grows in the shady underlayers of the rainforest. It's named after the Austrian horticulture expert and botanist Joseph Dieffenbach. The plant was brought to Europe and introduced as a houseplant in the 19th century.
Characteristics
The Dieffenbachia 'Mars', often referred to as the 'Dumb Cane', is an evergreen, perennial plant that impresses with its striking, oval-shaped leaves. The leaves are deep green with light green or cream-coloured spots, and can grow up to 30 cm long. The plant can reach a height of 1 to 1.5 metres. It rarely blooms indoors, but when it does, the flowers are cream-coloured and very small.
Care
The care of the Dieffenbachia 'Mars' requires a semi-shaded to bright location, but without direct sunlight to avoid burning its leaves. In terms of water supply, the plant likes moist soil, but stagnant water should be avoided. Give this plant less water in the winter than in the summer. For optimum health and growth, it is recommended to water the plant once a week and place it in a well-draining potting soil.
