Origin
The Pinus nigra Brepo®, also known as the Austrian or Black Pine, has its origin in the mountainous areas of Central Europe. It is a relatively young cultivar, specifically bred for its compact and regular growth.
Characteristics
The Pinus nigra Brepo® has a compact growing habit, with potential heights of 2 to 3 meters. The needles of this pine are dark green and have a length of 8 to 15 cm. In the spring, the plant produces yellow flowers, followed by brown cones in the autumn that can grow up to 7 cm long. The bark of the tree is grey to black and peels off in small plates.
Care
In terms of care, the Pinus nigra Brepo® is fairly low maintenance. The plant prefers a sunny location but can also tolerate shade. It is important that the soil is well-draining to prevent root rot. Pruning is not necessary but can be done to maintain the size and shape. The plant is very hardy and can tolerate temperatures down to -30°C. During prolonged drought periods, especially in the first years after planting, the Pinus nigra Brepo® should be adequately watered.
