Origin
The Ginkgo biloba Mariken originates from China and is a variety of the Ginkgo biloba, also known as the Japanese nut tree. This special species of tree has existed for over 250 million years and is the oldest living tree species on earth. Over the centuries, the tree has spread to many parts of the world. The Mariken variety was born from a random mutation in a Ginkgo biloba tree in the Netherlands.
Characteristics
The Ginkgo biloba Mariken is a compact, slow-growing tree that can eventually reach a height of about 1.5 meters. The leaves are fan-shaped and bright green in the summer, but change spectacularly to bright yellow in the autumn. Unique to this plant species is that the female and male flowers do not grow on the same plant. The fruit is an egg-shaped berry that first turns green and then yellow.
Care
In terms of care, the Ginkgo biloba Mariken is a relatively simple plant. It can grow in both full sun and half shade and prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil. The plant has a medium need for water, but tolerates a short period of drought well. Pruning is not necessary; only dead, damaged or incorrectly growing branches are best cut off in late winter or early spring.
