Bonsai
5PIPSSS17
Origin
The Pinus parviflora Saphir, also known as the Japanese White Pine, originates in East Asia, mainly Japan. The tree naturally grows in the mountains, often at higher altitudes. The plant was first identified and classified in Japan around 1776.
Characteristics
The Pinus parviflora Saphir is an evergreen tree that on average grows between 10 and 15 meters high. The tree is particularly known for its distinctively coloured needles, which are blue to grey-blue. Additionally, the tree bears cones that begin as purple but eventually turn brown. The tree's bark starts out smooth and grey, but as the tree matures, it becomes rougher and darker.
Care
The Pinus parviflora Saphir requires plenty of sunlight and can withstand wind well. The tree thrives in well-drained soil, with a preference for a neutral to lightly acidic pH. Although the tree is drought-resistant, sufficient watering is important. The tree can also benefit from annual fertilisation in early spring to promote growth and the colour of the needles. The tree requires little pruning and is generally quite low-maintenance.
