Origin
The Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola', also known as Japanese Forest Grass, originates from the mountains around Hakone in Japan. The growing conditions in this mountainous region have given the plant a unique adaptability to various climatic conditions. The plant was introduced in the West in the 19th century and has since gained a popular spot in many gardens and parks.

Characteristics
The distinguishing feature of the Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' lies in its striking shades of green with golden yellow stripes. It has a slow-growing, gracefully overhanging habit that can reach a height of about 0.6 meters over the course of the growing season. The compact leaves are ribbon-shaped and wavy, while the delicate inflorescences are on interrupted stalks. During the season, the colour of the leaves changes from green-yellow to red-orange in the autumn.

Care
The Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' thrives best in partial to full shade and in moist, well-draining soil. It is not particularly drought-tolerant and requires regular watering during dry periods. The plant does not necessarily need to be pruned every year, but old foliage can be removed in the spring to make room for new growth. The plant is frost-hardy but does require some protection in areas with severe winters.
