Origin
The Pennisetum 'Viridescens', also commonly known as the Fountain Grass, originates from East and tropical Africa as well as parts of Asia. Although it originally comes from a warm climate, this plant species has eventually spread and adapted to various climates all over the world.
Characteristics
The Pennisetum 'Viridescens' is a perennial plant that can grow up to 1.5 metres high. The plant has elongated, dark green leaves and blooms from the late spring until the first frost. During this time, the plant produces green to purple, brush-like inflorescences, reminiscent of a lamp brush. An interesting characteristic of the 'Viridescens' is that the inflorescences darken in colour as the bloom progresses.
Care
The Pennisetum 'Viridescens' has few demands in terms of its environment and is therefore easy to care for. This plant species thrives best in a sunny to semi-shade spot with well-draining soil. It is recommended to prune back the 'Viridescens' in the spring to make room for new growth. Despite this plant species being frost-resistant, it is advised to protect the plant against dehydration and strong winds during harsh winters.
