Origin
The Pinus mugo 'Varella' is a dwarf form of the mountain pine, also known under the name mountain mugo. This coniferous tree is naturally found in the mountain ranges of central and southern Europe, such as the Alps and the Carpathians. Its preference is to grow at high altitudes, usually between 1,000 and 2,200 meters above sea level.

Characteristics
The Pinus mugo 'Varella' is characterized by its compact and round shape, which is very suitable for rock gardens and smaller gardens. It is a slow-growing shrub that becomes approximately half a metre high in ten years. The needles are dark green and the cones of this conifer are reddish-brown in colour and can grow up to 6 cm in size.

Care
This mountain pine is extremely hard and can survive the most diverse climates, from cold winters to hot summers. It prefers well-drained, sandy or rocky soil and a sunny or semi-shaded location. Although the Pinus mugo 'Varella' is drought tolerant once it is well established, regular watering is recommended for the health of the plant. Pruning is not necessary but can be done to maintain the shape.
