Origin
The Caryota mitis, commonly known as the fishtail palm, originates from Southeast Asia. It is a palm species that primarily grows in the tropical rainforests of this region. Its distribution area includes countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Selected areas of Indochina and India also harbour this intriguing plant species.
Characteristics
The Caryota mitis can be recognised by its coarse trunk and fruits in clusters in mature specimens. The palm is characterised by its leaves with a distinctive shape reminiscent of a fishtail, hence the common name. When fully grown, these palms reach a height between 475-525 centimetres. They often grow in clusters, which give them a lush appearance.
Care
The care of the Caryota mitis requires specific attention. An abundance of bright, indirect light and temperatures between 18-27 degrees Celsius are optimal for its growth. Regular watering is important, but make sure the soil slightly dries out between the watering sessions. It does not like cold weather and poor drainage can lead to root rot.
