Origin
The Rhapis excelsa, also known as the Lady Palm, originally hails from Southern China and Taiwan. In these subtropical and tropical areas, the plant is very common. The distribution of the plant to other parts of the world occurred through trade and exploration.
Characteristics
Rhapis excelsa is a multi-trunked, slow-growing palm. The plant has long slender trunks covered with fibrous sheaths and glossy dark green leaves with serrated edges. The palm can reach a height of 6 to 12 feet, depending on conditions. It is a popular choice for indoor planting due to its tolerance for lower light conditions.
Care
Rhapis excelsa requires a moderate amount of light and can therefore grow well in partial shade and filtered light. The plant prefers average to high humidity and copes well with temperatures between 15 and 24 degrees Celsius. It is necessary to allow the soil to dry out between watering to prevent the roots from rotting. Like most palms, Rhapis excelsa likes a high nitrogen content in the soil.
