Origin
The Gymnocalycium baldianum, often known as the Dwarf cactus, originates from Argentina. Here, it found its origin in the dry, rocky areas of the Andes. This cactus species is one of many types within the Gymnocalycium genus, which is spread across the south of South America.
Characteristics
The Gymnocalycium baldianum is a dwarf cactus characterised by its spherical trunk and star-shaped flowers in shades of pink and red. The trunk has sharp ribs, onto which sharp, dark spikes are attached. Given ideal conditions, this plant can reach a height of around ten to fifteen centimetres. The summer flowering period is typical for this variety of cactus.
Care
The care of the Gymnocalycium baldianum requires some attention; it needs plenty of light, but not direct sunlight. Too much sun can cause the plant to burn. Watering should be done minimally, as the cactus has high drought tolerance and too much water can lead to root rot. It is recommended to bring the plant indoors in winter if temperatures drop below ten degrees Celsius to avoid frost damage.
