Living and working spaces increasingly fulfil multiple functions and they overlap indoors since the corona crisis encouraged home working. For example, a dining room has become an office or study area at the same time. As furniture is used multifunctionally, it creates layering in a space. How to implement and reinforce this with green in the interior is the focus of the 'Layered Spaces' style trend. We would be happy to tell you all about it!

Multifunctional, dynamic spaces

The main principles of the Layered Spaces trend are to create a feeling of spaciousness and to emphasise the multifunctionality of spaces. By adding or enhancing layering in a space, you can achieve these effects. Layering already exists in almost every interior. For example, in a living room, the seating area is distinguished by a large rug and in an office space, departments are created by the placement of desks. Wall and floor decoration can reinforce this, but also plants can play an important role here. Consider, for example, placing a room divider made of moss, or create a dynamic partition with various hanging plants.

Because spaces and the functions they fulfil are dynamic, it is important that objects can be moved easily. That way, they can always be reused for other purposes. This also applies to plants. Small plants are then obviously a good option, because they are very easy to move, but this is also possible for larger plants. Choose, for example, a planter made of fibreclay that is lightweight, or a planter on wheels, such as the Baq Line-Up cubes that feature a handy wheeled tray.

Contrasting colours, familiar shapes

Spaciousness and layering are best created through contrasts. The colour palette of the Layered Spaces style trend therefore consists of contrasting shades and colours. For example, bright, hard shades of red and blue are combined with soft shades of pink. The eye is naturally drawn towards the bright colours, causing the soft colours to fade into the background. This creates a sharper contrast that adds depth to a room. You can see this in the artificial bouquet, for example, where the bright pink Sedum and orange Banksia stand out against the pale pink Allium Giganteum and lilac Agapanthus.

This playing with contrasts is also important when it comes to the use of materials. For instance, combine hard metal or plastic with soft fabrics. In Layered Spaces, you will also mainly see contrasting shapes. You can implement this in the interior by combining rectangular planters with round shapes, for example. For instance, we have combined sleek planters such as the Baq Line-Up with the round tufts of the Dracaena fragrans 'Compacta'. In the dark blue Capi Nature Groove Special, a round container, we chose to place the Dracaena combo, a striking plant with leaves running into a sharp point.
