Origin
The Araucaria bidwillii, also known as the Bunya-Bunya tree, originates from Australia. This impressive pine tree is originally from the northeast of Queensland, where it grows in the higher regions of the Bunya Mountains and the Atherton Tableland. The indigenous population, the Aboriginals, have used the tree and its fruits for food and other practical applications for centuries.

Characteristics
Characteristic of the Araucaria bidwillii are its imposing height, which varies from 30 to 45 metres, and its rough, blue-green needles. The tree has a conical crown and a striking bark pattern that somewhat looks like puzzle pieces. The Araucaria bidwillii produces large, edible seeds that the indigenous population call 'Bunya nuts'. Furthermore, the tree grows slowly, making it ideal for long-term landscaping and parks.

Care
The Araucaria bidwillii requires specific care for optimal growth. The tree prefers a sunny to lightly shaded location and well-draining, acidic to neutral soil. It's crucial to avoid over-fertilising and waterlogging, as this can hinder root growth. While the Bunya-Bunya tree is resistant to light frost, protection against heavy frost is necessary. In winter, it can be useful to mulch the soil around the base of the tree to insulate the roots.
