Origin
The Cambria mix, also known as the Vuylstekeara, has its origin in the cross-breeding of different types of orchids. This cross was first made in Belgium, towards the end of the nineteenth century. The name Cambria derives from the name of the nursery that first carried out the cross, namely 'Orchid Nursery Vuylsteke' in Lede, Belgium. The cross utilised species from Asia, Central and South America, meaning the Cambria mix has a worldwide origin.
Characteristics
The Cambria mix is noticeable for its unique, exotic flowers. The plant displays a compact growing style and can reach up to 70 cm in height. The flowers are often large, striking and come in a variety of colours, including red, orange, yellow, pink and purple. They can have spots, stripes or a combination of both and are often strongly scented.
Care
The Cambria mix needs a light location but cannot tolerate direct sunlight. Therefore, a spot near a north- or east-facing window is ideal. The temperature should ideally lie between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. In the growth period, the plant requires high humidity and will need water approximately every 7 to 10 days. In the winter months, the plant should be given less water. However, in all seasons avoid getting water on the leaves to prevent rot. The Cambria mix requires a nutrient-poor soil and performs best in an orchid mix.
